Former imam jailed 6 years for ganja possession
KOTA BARU: A 61-year-old former imam, who has performed the haj four times, was sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Sessions Court here on Monday for possession of cannabis last year.
Che Shamsuddin Che Long, who pleaded guilty on two counts of the amended charge, appeared calm when the sentence was passed by judge Dazuki Ali.
The accused, from Kampung Beris Tengah, Tanjong Pauh, Bachok was charged with possessing seven rolls of white paper containing a total of 57.7 grams of dried cannabis on April 15 at about 8.30pm at an unnumbered house at the same village.
He was charged under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and could be sentenced under Section 39A(2) of the same Act.
On the second charge, he was accused of possessing two rolls of white paper containing 12.65 grams of dried cannabis at 7.50pm on the same date and at the same place.
Dazuki then sentenced Che Shamsuddin to six years on the first charge and two years on the second charge. The sentences would run concurrently.
The accused was represented by counsel Azahir Nasir while Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Rehan Mohd Aris appeared for the prosecution.
